3 Tips for DIY Caravan Parking Pad with EZY HEX Geo Grids

3 Tips for DIY Caravan Parking Pad with EZY HEX Geo Grids

Perfect for caravans, trailers, jet skis & more – summer-ready and wallet-friendly!

With the warmer months around the corner, it's the perfect time to prep your outdoor space for everything summer throws your way — think caravans, trailers, boats, jet skis and extra parking for visiting mates. But here’s the problem: Traditional concrete driveways are expensive, crack over time, and don’t drain well. Gravel’s cheaper, sure — but without the right base, it shifts, sinks, and turns into a muddy mess. That’s where EZY HEX geo grids come in. Built tough from recycled plastic, these interlocking panels keep your gravel in place, provide excellent drainage, and give you a solid base that’s easy to DIY yourself. Whether you're squeezing in an off-road caravan or need a clean pad for your jet ski trailer, follow these 3 key tips to build a driveway or parking bay that’s affordable, easy to install, and ready to handle anything.

Tip 1: Start with the Right Surface Prep

You know the saying — prep it right, or regret it later. Your parking pad is only as good as the ground it sits on. The good news? With EZY HEX, you don’t need heavy machinery or a concrete truck backing up your driveway. Just a bit of elbow grease and some simple steps:

Clear the Area

Remove any grass, weeds or debris. You want to be working with a clean, flat surface.

Level the Base

Scrape and flatten the area with a rake and a hand tamper or plate compactor. You want a firm sub-base that isn’t too soft or uneven.

Optional: Add Geotextile (Weed Mat)

Got soggy ground, clay soil or drainage issues? We recommend laying a layer of geotextile fabric under your base to stop gravel from sinking and prevent weeds. You can grab it with your grid order.

Tip 2: Use the Right Fill (and Know How Much You Need)

You’ve prepped the space — now it’s time to fill it smart. Each EZY HEX grid measures 500mm x 500mm x 50mm high and is made to be filled with compacted gravel or crushed rock. But not just any rock will do.

The Best Gravel Fill

5–10 mm crushed rock or road base. Avoid round pebbles — they don’t lock in well. No need for cement or binders. You’ll want to fill the grids right to the top — no more, no less — and give it a good compaction to lock everything down tight.

Tip 3: Follow the EZY Install Steps (It’s Legit DIY-Friendly)

This isn’t one of those “DIY” jobs that still needs three mates, a bobcat and a slab of beer. One or two people can knock out a decent-size parking space in a weekend with a shovel, rake and some patience.

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Step 1: Measure & Plan

Measure the area (length x width in metres). Use the grid calculator to figure out how many you need. Don’t forget to account for edges or any curves.

Step 2: Clear & Compact

Remove all grass and debris. Level the area and compact the soil or base. Add geotextile if needed.

Step 3: Add Base Layer

Lay 50–100mm of compacted crushed rock or road base. Smooth and level it evenly. Compact again for stability. Compact again for stability. For tips on compacting crushed rock properly, check out Conplants Soil Compaction Level Tips.

Step 4: Lay the Grids

Start from one corner and work your way out. Snap grids together like Lego — no tools needed. Use a handsaw or grinder if you need to trim edges.

Step 5: Fill & Compact

Fill the grids with your chosen gravel (5–10mm crushed rock is best). Spread evenly and make sure it’s flush with the grid surface. Compact the gravel to lock it all in.

Step 6: Enjoy the Finished Result

Park up the caravan, boat, jet ski or trailer. No puddles, no wheel ruts, no cracking — just a clean, tough base that’ll last.

Real Example: A DIY Caravan Parking Pad Done Right

A customer on the Gold Coast prepped a narrow side access area for their CRX Off-Road Caravan, transforming it into a clean, load-bearing parking spot that blends seamlessly into their existing driveway. They scraped and levelled the ground, laid geotextile to prevent sinkholes, used 10mm crushed rock for a solid, free-draining fill, and finished the look with timber edging. Now it’s ready for summer — and the caravan’s got a proper home between trips.
